trying to recharge my batteries... Oct. 12th, 2006 @ 12:34 am
It's been so long since I've had time off from work that I decided to forget about everything I needed to do today and layed about. I'm kicking myself right now but at least I'm somewhat refreshed.

I haven't touched my 360 in far too long. I need gaming time...

I got a 30GB Creative Zen:M MP3 player and gave my 256mb iriver to Alicia. I really love this thing and now she's starting to enjoy daily tunes as well. I'll upgrade her soon enough.

I pre-ordered .hack//G.U. because I wanted the limited edition Haseo figure. More precicely I wanted it for Alicia.

I bought a few geeky patches that I'm going to get put on my coat for the fall/winter/spring. I'll post some pics when I got it set.

I've had to delay work on the site until Jon and Mel move back to Toronto. It'll be hell to collaborate unless we can meet and work.

Might be joining an MUD soon. It's like a text-based RPG on forums. I really want to find a D&D group here in Toronto so I'm looking at online metting listings. Hopefully something will materialize.

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man... now why didn't I think of that...?

More when I'm feeling more productive... ttyl

Pretty close to losing my job at Pizza Pizza, not that I care really. It gives me the perfect excuse to get off my ass and find a writing job. I do need to get my portfolio together.

Mass Effect has been set for Q1 2007. In Bioware I trust.

Set up my comic buys for the month thanks to IGN C-Note.

Astonishing X-Men #17 - Marvel - $2.99
Writer: Joss Whedon | Artist: John Cassaday
Joss Whedon might defy logic sometimes (see the "Yeahbutwhat?" scene from last issue), but he and John Cassaday are always entertaining. We're entering the last leg of this classic X-Men run, but it's not too late to get started if you haven't already.

Civil War #4 -  Marvel  - $2.99
Writer: Mark Millar | Artist: Steve McNiven
Thor has returned and he's ready to kill someone. Mark Millar and Steve McNiven return after a series of delays to give us what is arguably the most captivating, and divisive, Marvel story in years. Issue #4 is right around the corner!

Wildcats: Worldstorm #1 - DC - $2.99
Writer: Grant Morrison | Artist: Jim Lee
It's Grant Morrison and Jim Lee. That's all we need to say. Go buy this comic.

Fables #53 - DC - $2.99
Writer: Bill Willingham | Artist: Mark Buckingham
The fate of Fabletown is decided in a meeting of the Adversary's generals. Will it be war? A series of assassinations? A tea party? We're privy to some chilling examples of what may befall Fabletown in the coming years. Plus, there's a backup story featuring art by the very talented Josh Middleton.

Uncanny X-Men #478 -  Marvel  - $2.99
Writer: Ed Brubaker | Artist: Billy Tan
Following the lackluster intermission issue, things are back on track. The crazy Summers brother is going to destroy everything that's had a hand in his horrible upbringing. And that means Corsair and the Shi'Ar Empire are in his sites.

X-Men #191 - Marvel - $2.99
Writer: Mike Carey | Artist: Chris Bachalo
It took a couple of issues, but Mike Carey and Chris Bachalo have propelled this book into the top tier of X-books, even above certain ones located in space. Carey has managed to take the typical "mystery villain" plot and make it interesting by giving us the oddest X-team in the history of the title. Add in some breathtaking action sequences by Bachalo and you have a winner.

Civil War: Front Line #6 -  Marvel  - $2.99
Writer: Paul Jenkins | Artist: Various
Front Line might seem less important than its bigger cousin because of its placement on our list, but trust us when we say it's just as good. Do not miss this book. It fills in a lot of details surrounding the registration battle that can't possibly be crammed into the main event. If you are enjoying Civil War then you will enjoy Front Line.

Nextwave #8 -  Marvel  - $2.99
Writer: Warren Ellis | Artist: Stuart Immonen
What can you expect from this issue? We can guarantee three things: Something will get kicked, things will explode, and you will laugh your ass off. Grant Morrison declared deconstructionism is dead in comics. This is the proof. KA-BOOM!!

Eternals #4 -  Marvel  - $3.99
Writer: Neil Gaiman | Artist: John Romita, Jr.
Do we really need more super-powerful beings in the Marvel Universe? Surely that was the question everyone had when they started to read the new Eternals series. Neil Gaiman has done a superb job of not only crafting a mystery around these beings, but has managed to insert his story right into the middle of Civil War. Gaiman and Romita, Jr. wanted readers to discover the Eternals as they read, and given the quality of the title so far, that's exactly what we are eager to do.

Stan Lee Meets Spider-Man -  Marvel  - $3.99
Writer: Stan Lee & Joss Whedon | Artist: Olivier Coipel
The concept of this series is just too good to ignore. To celebrate Stan Lee's 65th anniversary with Marvel, Stan and an assortment of modern creators are gathering to tell tales of Stan meeting some of his best creations. While Dr. Strange, Dr. Doom and others are all great, it would be insane to ignore Stan meeting Spider-Man. If you're looking for light-hearted fun (with a backup story by Joss Whedon) look no further.

Daughters of the Dragon: Samurai Bullets - Marvel - $15.99
Writer: Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti | Artist: Khari Evans
If you dig Nextwave, but want a bit more T&A to go with the kicking and exploding, look no further than DOD. Khari Evans does wonders with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll have improper thoughts about two-dimensional images. Good times.

I'm exited about the return of Alpha Flight, though it will be called Omega Flight now. Got the special edition of Soulfire #6 at the con, LOVE this series.

Got a package from Megagear today. I'm reworking my wordrobe to fit my true geeky nature. I'm tapping Thinkgeek as well. I got:

And a few knick-knacks, accesories and bling. More money is needed but eventually I'll have a fully geeked-out fashion going. Perfectly me.

Off on a business roadtrip sadly, I'll post upon return. Take care all!

I'M ENGAGED!!! Sep. 5th, 2006 @ 10:48 pm
Thanx all for waiting that absurdly long time for a good post from me.

Last weekend was the FAN Expo, formally known as SFX. It seems to get larger every year and I learn how to use my time more wisely every time I go. I managed to blow about $1000 of joint income with my new (official) fiance, and I think we made some good deals and walked away with everything we wanted to get... more or less.

We had a large group come with us this year. Deanna, a friend of my fiance's, who owes me alot of cash but still managed to afford coming down. Jon and Melissa, a couple we hang with, my little brother and Carl. I naturally took the role of organizer and leader, and am pretty content with my performance. Everything went according to plan. We caught the seminars we wanted and had ample time for food, rest and shopping.

Video Games Live was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and i urge ANYONE interested in music and/or games to check it out. From what I hear it might become a yearly event so stay tuned to www.videogameslive.com

Tommy Tallarico was on hand later at the con to answer questions, and he cherged me in fixing the video game journalism industry. I now have a quest in life.

Saturday night held the biggest moment for us. I arranged for reservations for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. Plans we set up weeks in advance with my friends and the cafe staff so that I could propose to Alicia properly. The waitress would keep an eye on the table and wait for my signal, and at the drop of a key phrase everyone at the table would make an excuse to set away so we could have some privacy. Alicia almost got up with the rest of them but other then that it went perfectly and she said yes then started crying. I won't bore you with the little speech I gave her before the ring, but it had to do with couples in some of our favorite stories as a reference to our lives. It went well considering I ad-libed most of it. Sparkling wine was brought over and we were introduced to the entire restaurant as a newly enganged couple with everyone shouting their congratulations. A great night none of us will ever forget.

Other little notes of the weekend. I'm now VERY broke, which I expected and can recover from. I'm not as bad at DDR as I thought, and that new Naruto fighting game for the PS2 isn't bad at all if you can get past the voices.

And the reason I haven'y posted for so long? Simply put I was afraid I'd drop a clue here and she's read it. Sorry all. If it helps just consider your patience an assist to my plan, to which I'm grateful.

No date has been set yet, but we hope to get the wedding done by 2010, as well as the heonymoon to Japan.

*Tries to think of stuff to mention*

I'm an official college grad now. I have a Xbox 360 with Prey, Ghost Recon and Elder Scrolls 4, my appartment still isn't painted and, well, life goes on.

I think that's good for now. I'll be posting regularly again, though I'll be gone for a week while in London, Ontario for work. There's a lot more to talk about though, so stay tuned!

» HOLY S**T THAT'S GOOD SOUP!!!
http://www.originalsoupman.com/

Yeah, one of these places opened up in the Eaton's Centre. I think it may be the only one in Canada. So After the interview at NOW (I'll get to that next) I find myself at the centre around lunchish. I pop in and there it is across from the food court. VERY clean and a sign telling patrons how to line up straight, make the order fast and move to the far left. It was a desision between Crab Bisque or Beef Gumbo. I went with the beef and got it to go with a root beer just in case it was bad. Along with the bowl (medium on the range of sizes and pretty expensive for soup) I got a nice piece of bread, a good plastic spoon (probably the best plastic spoon I've ever used) a chocolate, a napkin, two side add-ons for the soup (one was shredded cheddar/parsley and the other sour cream) and a tangerine. I was actually surprised at everything I got which made me feel better about the price. I took it to go and went outside, across the street to Dundas Square. Small tables for the summer, street performers with actual music talent and water fountains in parts of the walkway so kids can play (I remember one night getting hammered and running through those things... lots of fun). It was a great day and it was all very calming. I opened the soup bowl (sturdy little thing), added the add-ons, mixed a bit and then started testing it like a pro. Smell was deep and reminisent of beef herbs, the colour was a deep brown (lightened a bit nicely by the sour cream) and it looks REALLY hearty. After tasting it I can clearly state that not only would it be worth twice the price but THAT WAS THE BEST FUCKING SOUP I'VE EVER HAD!!!

If you can, have soup there. YOU MUST COMPLY! RESISTENCE IS FUTILE!!!

So, the meeting went very well. I was there early as usual (it's a good practice if you're in the journalism game) and had a snack of some cheap California rolls at the NOW lounge (8 pieces for $4 and good quality is pretty good). I managed to get all the important questions answered well before she had to split. Very nice lady with a very rich history, that Susan Cole is. I'll start dicecting the recording tomorrow. And Susan, if you're reading this, Thanks a bunch. You can expect my application!

I got Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition yesterday. I'll start in on it after the school year ends. Tomorrow is far too busy to even think about gaming. Plus I'm paying for EVE.

Bought X-men: The 198 ish.#4 and the box set to Magical Shopping Arcade Abenohashi. Both very good. I was going to get the latest Wildcats: Coda and Wildcats: Nemesis, but since I don't have any of the previous issues in the mini-run I'll wait for the trade paperback.

Can't wait for the income tax money to come in so I can seriously start shopping for that laptop. I've been looking for one on ebay. I hope I can find something by Alienware in my price range. I'd love to carry one of those.

OK so I think I'm going to use this semi-formal and just take the plunge. Gotta work out how exactly.

Oh yeah, check this:
http://www.weakgame.com/media_9027_Light_Sabre_Duel.html

Not only if this the best saber duel I've ever seen, but it rocks all the more because it was done by fans (probably film students) and George Lucas had NOTHING to do with it. I'm going to send an e-mail to George Strombo @ the Hour, they like putting these cool finds on the air.

L8S all!

» munching on trail mix...
Decided to head down to the boookstore between classes and pick up a bunch of snacks. I usually use this class to update and surf so I prefer to be comfortable. It's really hot in here today though...

I got Ms. Vickies regular chips, some Rold Gold pretzels, trail mix and a Minute Maid Orange Juice.

Got that feature done. Sounded pretty well and was fairly easy to clean up. Handed in my postcard and CD cover as well.

Signed up for a semi-formal grad party. I got the max of 4 tickets at $20 a pop. Going to be myself, Alicia, Jon and Leah.

Hmm... Maybe I should propose there. It's really either that or Ginza Sushi in June. There was also the idea of going to the Montreal Bistro but most of my peeps think she'll catch on.

I could really use some feedback on this...

Doesn't look like Carl will be out this week. I'm going to give him one more week and that's it. I'll tell him Saturday.

I've gotta learn how people are posting pics here. For now I might just link from my photobucket.

Oh yeah if you haven't been to 4chan.org they have some new boards they're trialing. Good stuff, especially the cosplay board.

So Easter will soon be upon us. I have to work Good Friday. Saturday Alicia and I will be going to Baby Steps. Alicia will be pitching ideas for their website which she will create, and I'll be intereviewing the girls and observing for an article I'm going to pitch to Today's Parent. If they like Alicia's work they'll contract her for Project RED accounts, and if Today's Parent likes my work it might just launch my career.

Sunday is DINNER WITH FAMILY! I love dinners with the whole family. Good food, good conversation, and a small sense of belonging. Even Alicia says she prefers the tighter-knit family life I enjoy to hers.

X-Men: the 198 ish #4 hit shelves yesterday. Gotta grab that, even though the IGN review says to pass it. I'm really waiting for the rebirth of Wildcats. Cyberforce is starting up again and ish #1 isn't bad.

http://comics.ign.com/articles/701/701495p1.html

Well into my searching for a laptop. If anyone is selling one or sees one on sale on the net, let me know. I'm pretty much looking only for a protable word prosessor. A CD burner/DVD reader combo drive and a USB 2.0 connection are all I need. I don't really care about anything else as long as they're sufficient. Software I can take care of myself. Good bettery life is important.

Next week is going to my a complete mind-frag. I don't think I'll be getting any sleep and I'll be getting as much time in class as possible. I have that assesment on Tuesday, interview on Thursday, and a shitload of stuff due.

I wish I could afford to buy stuff at ThinkGeek. I tell you once I get some office space and put aside some cash to pimp it out... well... check out these for starters:

Back on EVE, though I won't be putting any serious time into it for a few days. Also got issues 2 and 3 of EON, their magazine. Looks interesting but I'll let you know when I get them and have a chance to go through them.

Just finishing up a speech for radio class. It was on any topic I wanted and I chose this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Thompson_%28attorney%29

I can't believe this guy is still running his mouth. I need to get a "I Hate Jack Thompson" shirt or something. Do I hate him? no. He's just the figurehead of a movement to quell all new social elements that the older classes don't understand. It has been going on since the 1700s actually. Backtracking it looks like this:

Video games > Rock music and comic books > The Telephone > movies > The Waltz > Novels. Seriously, they used to think novels did the same thing to kids that we're blaming games of doing today. Read Tom Standage's article in WIRED magazine entitled, "Those Darn Kids and Their Darn New Technology".

Want to lend a hand in fighting against nutbars like Jackass? go to:

http://www.gamepolitics.com/

Also bought The Diamond Edition of Neverwinter Nights. I'll probably also get the sequel once it's out since it'll probably have an upgraded toolset. I owe it to myself to at least try and get the job.

I'm sorta surprised that Alicia's actually remembering that our anniversary is on the 16th. She's horrible at remembering days and places. Hell she can barely remember our home phone number and address.

I think I've made a horrible mistake. I've got to keep the fact that I'm ready to drop the big question a secret from her until June, but I've been talking about the ring here a lot. Now I've got to make sure she stays disinterested in my blog or else she'll read it and my cover will be blown. Wish me luck.

Oh yeah, the ring was appreaised and I paid about as much as it was worth. Hey, as long as I didn't get screwed. If I had paid that extra $1000 I would have snapped and hunted that lady down.

Next Tuesday I'll be interviewing this woman:
http://www.nowtoronto.com/about/bios/sgcole.php
A bit nervous, but I've delt with bigger. Just got to ask the right questions.

Got a chance to flex my culinary muscles this evening. I don't get to nearly as often as I like to because of time and money. I made Rotini in a bacon ( used a whole pack, cut it up into 2 inch pieces and fried them in a pan) and mushroom sauce that I seasoned with a lot of roasted and unroasted chopped garlic, oregano, salt, pepper, a pinch of that buffullo chicken seasoning, and I loosened it up with lots of extra vergin olive oil (amazing stuff) and a few shots of a nice gewurtzraminer wine (yes yes I know white wine and red tomato don't usually mix, but it worked).

OK, finish writing this damned thing then off to bed. Got an early class.

OK watched .hack//Roots 1 and Bleach 77. Bother view good.

The first ep of Roots already had more action then the entire series of .hack//Sign, which is a very good thing. Good characters, diolougue and music. The artwork is standard level and what I expected, though I hoped for more. Can't wait for the games.

Bleach 77 has action and laughs in generous amounts. The first between Ichigo and Maki, the renegade shinigami was cool but a bit too short. After that they went into Maki's backstory, which wasen't very interesting. Yourichi showed up with a bit of backup (those two kids who live with Urahara) and blew the mansion up. Kariya almost kills Ichigo but everyone escapes. In any case the pieces of Kariya's puzzle are slowly coming together.

I met him once as well at the CBC building. He spoke to my journalism class and used me (and my just-bought copy of Electronic Gaming Monthly) as an example of how the media was changing and journalists had to change as well. I look forward to the next time we meet and hopefully we can chat one-on-one.

COMMENTS! NOW!
» Quicky.
Woke up early because my group wanted to get started filming our PSA so we could get to the editing this week. I was early but from what I can tell they met with each other and left without me. know this because one of them signed out a lighting kit today. I ended up helping out another group who could use a spare actor. Lucky for me, since I would have gone bonkers just sitting there.

Connection was down at home this morning. Damn... my torrents are just sitting there.

In film class right now. Pretty boring since this teach is used to working with more advanced and dedicated film students, not media foundations students. He tries to be simple but he ends up telling us nothing and flubbing up.

There's also an article about this in that copy of WIRED magazine I was talking about before. I gotta say, I'm interested.

jaddziadax's nonno (grandfather) is dying and I'm encouraging him to share and celebrate his life.

It's a firm belief of mine that the death of a loved one should be a cause for celebration. Instead of giving a boring eulogy, play his favorite song or tell his favorite joke (even if it's that Aristocrats joke). A life well lived IS its own reward and it should be commemorated, not with tears, but with story and song.

Just to make sure that my funeral will go EXACTLY the way I want it to, I'm planning it out in detail. That may sound glib for a healthy 23 year old but I find it not only reassuring, but fun. Think about it, nobody is going to argue with a dead man's reqeusts for his own funeral, so it's license to go nuts (just as long as you don't break the bank... it's expensive to die these days).

For instance, I'm going to be creamated. One part of my ashes is going up into space like they do for Star Trek actors (it costs about $1000USD, cheaper then you'd think) and the rest is going to be scattered on the ground. Not sure where but as the person doing the scattering moves towards the spot and everyone is there, I want them to play "Another one bites the dust) by Queen. If possible the bearer should proceed to boogie down accordingly. Obviously I'll be choosing the ENTIRE reception menu, not to mention arrange some kind of live band. A tribute band of some sort fits... maybe Chilli Peppers.

Obviously It's still in the works. I'm sure I have life insurance as well... somewhere...

Looks like Lynne is going to have to hang on to my copy of We the Media for a while longer... likely through the summer. She tried to give it back unread today with the excuse that she wouldn't have a chance to read it in the rest of the school year. I told her to hang on to it. I'll most likely be back next year and I hate getting books back when people cite "no time" as an excuse, especially when she seemed genuinely interested. It's not a problem for me anyways since my usual long "need to borrow that book" list is empty.

I'm behind on quite a few assignments for three classes, both dealing with photoshop (aka, that evil program. Seriously I have nightmares about marching ants, feathers and magic wands) but hopefully I'll be able to get through them with a little tutoring from Alicia. Flahs will have to be rushed during class. Thank goodness afer this year I'll never have to touch photoshop or illustrator or flash again. I will miss Leslie and Paul (my Photoshop/Illustrator and Flash instructors respectively). Good people. Leslie read this Blog and came up to me today in her usual gleeful manner and said she felt famous. She's always good for a laugh.

I'll have to make an effort of staying in touch with them both. Leslie and I both watch a lot of the same shows (House, for example) and Paul and I talk tech often. At the very least I'll see them in the halls.

Jon and Leah came over last night to pick up thier forgotten copy of Guitar Hero. We jammed, I ruled, Leah moped and Jon consoled. Jon and I went doen to grab some pizza for everyone and I let loose with the griping as we waited. Thank goodness for Jon, he's a good sounding board.

Speaking of Guitar Hero, I've got 2 more songs to beat and I got medium done! All the guitars I want are bought and I've unlocked all the bonus material and extra songs.

I was talking to a friend in class about perhaps trying out playing the real thing. A starter set and simple lessons don't seem hard, though I find I'm a better singer. Something to consider nonetheless.

GOT PAID TODAY! Gotta pay off some credit card, call Bell (about getting my long-disance back and possibly changing my number. I'm getting way too many calls for people I don't even know) and see how much I have left... if anything. Tax-wise Alicia and I will be getting around $1500 together. I forgot to claim my rent since I pay cash which would have gotten me another $500. Getting another few hundred over 2 years via GST. Hopefully I'll be able to send Alicia home this month if not the beginning of May.

Oh yeah Alicia's mom e-mailed back and said she would wait for her to come there. Don't know if she said anything about the OSAP thing though.

Tax money will come as soon as I get the papers signed and returned.

Tonight is chores and homework. Weekend is work and homework (if I can manage). Don't expect me to post during working weekends after 26 hours in two days but I'll try.

Now vid came out of dotchakers today about .hack//G.U. Can't wait for the release. Watched Roots. I can tell it's going to be a slow build-up. Prequel stories like this usually are. Still it already has more action then all of .hack//Sign as a whole.

I'm wondering how to celebrate the end of the school year and my subsequent graduation and certificate. Might catch a movie, hit the Velvet Underground (my favorite bar), who knows.

Picked up the April 06 issue of WIRED magazine. Really good read and I suggest everyone pick it up if you're interested in the evolution of media and the marketplace.

Dan Gillmour should be a contributor to WIRED. Maybe I'll drop the suggestion in his inbox sometime.

I'll probably post again after my appartment is clean and I read more of this mag.

Yeah I dislike CNN just as much as most, but at least some of thier sections are free of their demons.

Apple comps to runs Windows XP

While there may be format wars across the board all the time, the market will always drive itself towards standards. We'll see how this plays out in the long run.

Pair of Black Holes locked in dance of death
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/04/06/black.holes/index.html
Cosmology is a passion of mine, and I'd like to think that I'd be at Berkeley right now if my math skills weren't non-existant. Still I know much more then the avarage person about how our universe works on the very small to the very large (quantum mechanics and super-string theory make me tingle ^_^) and this kind of thing just drives me to learn more. Most people can't even fathom what a Black Hole is... which I find funny...

New Rings found around Uranus
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/04/06/rings.of.uranus.ap/index.html
Slightly interesting, yet very funny. Seriously though, Jupiter and Saturn interest me alot more. Europa holds so many possibilities as far as terraforming and extraterrestrial life (I'm a firm believer in the Drake equation, even though that doesn't really fit into our own solar system) and I REALLY want to know what kind of massive celestial firepower was needed to pulverize so many moons that Saturn's rings came into being.
» The Gospel of Judas?
You want controversy? This is sure to get some...

http://www9.nationalgeographic.com/lostgospel/

Okay here's the way I see it. Jesus liked Judas enough to make him an apostle, in fact he may have been favored. Jesus told Judas to go snitch on Jesus so Jesus could "die for our sins" (if that's what you believe, I don't personally). If that's true then the man we see as a traitor and a man deserving of his own special level of hell (read Dante's Inferno) was almost paramount to Jesus' plans. Perhaps we judge too quickly?

Maybe I should outline my belief structure sometime. Maybe tomorrow. Not right now... early class.
